The garden of England … perforated by chalk mining
Deneholes and chalkwells are common terms for the widespread small chalk mines, concentrated in Kent and Surrey.
As a result subsidence has been widely reported, notably in Rochester Upon Medway.
Locally concentrated limestone and iron mining was also present in the South East.

Chalk mining search
Extracted for agricultural and industrial needs. The often small chalk mines are locally referred to as deneholes and chalkwells.
Notably clustering at Dartford, Dover, Gravesend and Sittingbourne in Kent; Reigate and Redhill in Surrey.
Metalliferous (iron) mining search
Hitting its height in the 16 and 17th centuries, iron was mined at Crawley, Crowfield, Haslemere, Tonbridge, Royal Tunbridge Wells and Uckfield.
Limestone mining search
Purbeck limestone has been mined in East Sussex at and near Burwash Common, Netherfield and Battle.
